Dairy Farm Assistant Job in Canterbury

Job Description

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Dairy Farm Assistant to join our team. This role is essential in supporting our dairy operations, ensuring the health and welfare of our livestock, and maintaining the quality and efficiency of our milk production.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure the effective operation of all aspects of the milking process, including plant hygiene and somatic cell count, to maintain grade-free standards.
  • Operate and maintain the farm's effluent system to all regional council compliance requirements and the employer’s additional standards, including maintaining all appropriate effluent management records.
  • Implement animal health programs to maintain good health, assist with calving, wintering, and the calf rearing program to achieve minimal losses and ensure high-quality replacements are available for the herd.
  • Work with the Dairy Farm Manager to contribute to the Farm Business Plan, manage repairs and maintenance schedules for all plant, machinery, and infrastructure.
  • Comply with health and safety requirements, including wearing all personal protective equipment (PPE).

Additional Duties

  • Assist with feed planning and management.
  • Manage weeds and pests to maintain pasture and crops.
  • Apply fertilizer and implement irrigation requirements.
  • Ensure all herd records are maintained and report any incidents of unwell animals to the Farm Manager.
  • Assist to work within best practice environmental guidelines.

Requirements

  • Minimum 30 hours per week guaranteed.
  • Accommodation is available - no pets allowed.
  • Physical fitness is required.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • CV submission is mandatory.

Qualifications

  • Experience in dairy farming or a similar agricultural role is preferred.
  • Strong commitment to animal welfare and sustainable farming practices.
  • Excellent team player with robust communication skills.
  • Valid work visa, temporary visa information, New Zealand citizenship, or residency status must be provided.
