Your Opportunity:

As a Herdsperson at Smithfield Foods, you will play a vital role in ensuring the welfare and well-being of our animals. You'll work alongside experienced Herd Technicians, assisting in routine animal care and general farm tasks. This position involves a variety of responsibilities, including farm sanitation, animal movement, and basic veterinary procedures. You'll have the opportunity to operate farm equipment, learn essential husbandry skills, and contribute to the health, growth, and breeding of our animals. Core Responsibilities:

• Feed, water, vaccinate, and perform general animal husbandry tasks.
• Assist in moving animals and maintaining efficient animal flows.
• Sanitize and wash multiple areas on the farm using high-pressure equipment.
• Process piglets, including injecting medications, castrating, docking tails, and ear notching.
• Maintain accurate production information and update department records.
• Treat sick animals with pharmaceuticals and follow standard operating procedures and training guides.
• Assist with facility and equipment maintenance, barn cleanliness, and laundry duties.
• Follow the Company’s animal welfare policies, ensuring humane treatment of animals.
• Comply with all environmental, safety, and biosecurity laws and procedures.

Qualifications:

• High School diploma or GED preferred.
• Previous livestock handling experience helpful.
• Ability to perform hard physical labor.
• Strong commitment to teamwork and ability to follow instructions.
• Willingness to work an average 48-hour work week, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
• Ability to work well with others in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
• Respectful, approachable, and team-oriented, building strong working relationships.
• Ability to work with and around a wide range of antibiotics.
• Tolerance for blood, animal dander, manure, dust, odors, and noisy conditions.
