 Job Title: Junior Shepherd

Location: Auckland, New Zealand

Organization: Auckland Council

About Auckland Council:

Auckland Council is the steward of 22 Regional and Local Parks across the Auckland region, covering a vast 1700 hectares of land. Our farming operations are one of the largest in Auckland, with a total of 13,000 sheep and 1,200 cattle involved in breeding and finishing. We prioritize stock class management, breed types, stocking rates, and sheep-to-cattle ratios to manage public land while preserving park resources and wider objectives.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a Junior Shepherd to join our team, working across various farm locations as needed. In collaboration with the Farming Operations Manager, Block Supervisors, and Park Rangers, your primary responsibility will be to implement the operational plan to optimize farm performance. This role offers a unique growth opportunity to enhance your shepherding skills by participating in day-to-day farm activities, including stock work, animal health, pasture management, and general maintenance.

About You:

The ideal candidate will have 1-2 dogs under good command and demonstrate practical farming skills in stockmanship, fencing, general maintenance, and safe operation of farm machinery and equipment. You should be committed to continuous self-development and open to adopting new technologies to enhance farm productivity and profitability. If you've recently completed tertiary and/or vocational training and aspire to build your career in an enterprise-level farming operation, we want to hear from you.

What We Offer:

This is your chance to contribute to an enterprise where quality land, livestock, infrastructure, and exceptional people are at the core of our goals.

If you are excited about being part of a holistic farming system that balances being a green space, a productive farm, and an integral part of the natural environment, then we invite you to apply.
