Our aquarium is home to a diverse range of marine life, including freshwater and saltwater fish, crustaceans, Tuatara, Penguins, and we also serve as a rehabilitation facility for marine sea Turtles. Job Description:

As a Full Time Assistant Aquarist, you will play a vital role in assisting the Curatorial department with the daily operations of the aquarium, with a primary focus on salt and freshwater fish habitats. Your responsibilities will include caring for our remarkable aquatic residents, maintaining immaculately clean displays, promoting education and conservation, and ensuring an exceptional experience for our visitors. Please note that this role requires a 40-hour workweek, which may include weekends and public holidays.

Qualifications and Requirements:

To excel in this role, you should possess the following qualifications and attributes:

  • Hold a SCUBA certification of Rescue Diver, Dive Master, Dive Instructor, or Commercial Diving Qualification.
  • Ability to pass and maintain an occupational dive medical certification.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining clean displays.
  • Excellent observation, organizational, record-keeping, and communication skills.
  • Valid New Zealand working rights and physical capabilities, including bending, stooping, crawling, crouching, kneeling, balancing, climbing heights (up to 4 meters), and lifting up to 30kg.
  • Preferred: First aid and/or oxygen resuscitation training, knowledge of marine animal husbandry within the aquarium industry, and computer skills using MS Office and Excel.
  • Outstanding communication skills and a solution-focused mindset.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and strong organizational and time management skills.
